Your click bait title, clever subject line, cheeky ad, funny giphy, or outrageous video might get someone’s attention, but once you have their attention, are you earning their trust?
Attention is a high-value resource: a person only has so much of it to give.
Are those who paid attention to your interruption better off for having done so, or just you? Would those you’re interrupting be eager to give you their attention again? Is gaining attention your ultimate goal, or is it merely a step towards the longer, more worthwhile journey of earning trust and building meaningful relationships?
It’s hard to interrupt people well and trust develops over time, and therein lies the opportunity.
