Sometimes we’re so scared of making one type of mistake that we make another type instead.
- Type 1 Mistake: doing something that goes wrong (commission)
- Type 2 Mistake: not doing something that could have gone right (omission)
We don’t innovate to make the inevitable happen. We innovate to make a difference.
Our fear of making Type 1 Mistakes—which are an inherent part of the process of learning and innovation—often leads us to instead make Type 2 Mistakes—which typically inhibit innovation.
Innovation requires the courage to make less Type 2 Mistakes by taking a responsible level of risk in being willing to make more Type 1 Mistakes.
Innovation requires daring to do something that might not work, but if it did could make all the difference.
