You may be a top freestyle swimmer in the pool, but swimming that stroke in the ever-changing conditions of an open water race is likely not a winning strategy.
While pool swimming and open water swimming are both part of the same larger sport, a pool swimmer’s technique differs in a number of ways from that of their open water counterpart. Those swimming in the pool have optimized their stroke for the calm, consistent conditions of that context, whereas those swimming in open water have adapted their stroke to tackle different and dynamic challenges.
Different contexts require different techniques to succeed, whether in swimming or in any business function.
An adaptation that accelerates you in one context might hinder you in another.
So what’s your context and are you adapting and optimizing your stroke accordingly?
