If you’re asking people to pay attention, then you best be sure their payment leads to you doing the work to earn their trust—that they would be eager to pay you attention again.
Attention is a high-value resource: a person only has so much of it to give.
If attention leads to trust, then that trust leads to more attention because the word spreads. That attention then leads to more trust, and on goes the virtuous cycle.
However, if you ask people to pay attention and you squander their payment, you’ve also squandered your reputation and that’s not an easy thing to regain.
