Meaning Matters

What you say is probably not what I hear and what I say is probably not what you hear.

  • How many people live in a small town?

  • What is innovation?

  • How long is “just a little bit further”?

  • What’s organizational culture?

  • How would you define leadership?

Our answers to these questions might be quite different. As Marty Rubin said, “When the meaning is unclear there is no meaning.”

If we don’t take a moment to clarify and get aligned on meaning, we’re at high risk of unknowingly stepping into the traps of miscommunication and misunderstanding, which can sabotage projects and relationships.

If we don’t have a shared understanding of the purpose, priorities, process, and goals, how can we be aligned on what success and progress looks like?

If you’re not sure on the meaning, seek clarity.

P.S. The pandemic thrust many of us into remote work — and widespread work-from-home arrangements are predicted to become permanent over the long-haul.

My Spotlight Trust co-founder Rick Kitagawa and I have spent the last couple months talking to leaders about their swift shift to remote.

While many organizations made due with a rapid remote transition, there’s a realization that their current remote approach isn’t sustainable and pitfalls are emerging.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce the Reimagining Remote Virtual Studio, the most comprehensive, people-centered program for leading a virtual work experience that builds trust, belonging, and engagement.

We hope you’ll join us in Reimagining Remote so you can lead your people forward into a lasting, more human remote future. We’re small by design, so spots are limited and now’s the time to reserve your spot at the best price.
