How fast are you going?
When I’m trail running, I don’t put much emphasis on current pace. I know my pace varies with the terrain.
I slow down so I can safely navigate more technical and rough terrain. I also slow down on steep climbs too—you’ll most likely find me power hiking these—so I can conserve energy to run at a faster pace in other sections of the trail, like the flats and the most familiar sections where my feet just know where to go.
If you were to use my current pace at a single point on the trail to gauge when I might finish my route, you’re likely to be off. Maybe even by quite a lot in either direction.
If you want to know how fast I’m going on my run, you might be best to consider average pace rather than current pace.
