The rule behind Rule Number Six

Rule Number Six is the work I get to do. It’s an honour to be trusted to design and facilitate processes to make change happen, to make better work by making work better.

As I do this work, I’m often asked what’s the rule behind the name?

Rule Number Six was inspired by a story shared in chapter 6 of the book The Art of Possibility: Transforming Professional and Personal Life by Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander

“Rule Number 6 is ‘Don’t take yourself so g—damn seriously.’”

And there aren’t any other rules.

Zander and Zander describe that the practice of Rule Number 6 “is to light up, which may well light up those around you.” This is at the core of my work with Rule Number Six.

This beacon of a rule is an invitation to show up as our true selves to a space that encourages bravery, and to see and connect with others as they are – even when things get tense. It’s a reminder to get over ourselves so we can trust others, we can cooperate, we can co-create. It’s a reminder that this is the work we get to do

As the story goes,

“Please remember Rule Number 6.”

And Rule Number Six too.
