It’s not uncommon to feel uncomfortable when you’re embarking on something new, especially when a specific outcome isn’t guaranteed.
Learning and growth involve pushing past our comfort zones so we can expand into new horizons of possibility.
But when that uncomfortable feeling surfaces, it’s important to understand its underpinnings.
Is it because you’re afraid or you’re not sure?
If you’re afraid, it may very well be linked to impostor syndrome. Most of us at one time or another feel hesitant for fear that we’re not enough or we might fail. You can let this type of fear get in the way of stepping into your own possibility or you can choose to embrace it to propel yourself forward.
If you’re not sure, it’s crucial to probe further as to why. It might simply stem from the natural tension that comes from the lack of a specific guarantee and you can press on or it might be a warning sign that something is off and it’s important to pump the brakes.
If we want to learn, level-up, and innovate, we need to experience being uncomfortable. We also need to develop the self and situational awareness to discern the different types of uncomfortable so we can mitigate the perilous ones and leverage the ones that underpin positive forward motion.
